How-to-Get-a-Medical-Cannabis-Card-in-Ontario---compressor.jpgReceiving medical cannabis treatment and purchasing your prescription can be a little bit challenging because cannabis is currently illegal in Canada. In order to prove you are legally allowed to use and have cannabis for medical reasons, there are some hoops you have to jump through. The rules are in place to ensure only the people who need it for medical reasons have it. However, this summer, the rules will change again when recreational marijuana is made legal.

One of the things you need to have in order to purchase medical marijuana is a medical cannabis card. There are some requirements to get one. Here’s how to get a medical cannabis card in Ontario:

Proof of Residence

The first requirement for receiving your medical cannabis card is an easy hoop to jump through. You just need to show proof of residence. Medical cannabis is currently legal in Canada, so as long as you prove you live in Canada, you’ve passed this requirement.

To prove you live in Canada, you need to present identification with your picture and address on it. You can use your driver’s licence or your passport to meet this requirement.

ACMPR Program

The Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) is how to get a medical cannabis card in Ontario. You apply for your card through ACMPR, and your application is looked at to determine whether you have met the criteria.

The easiest way to fill out the application is to talk to your doctor or to a medical cannabis clinic. Your condition must be monitored within the last year by a doctor, and the doctor must be able to practice medicine within Canada. You can get your family doctor to help you fill out the forms. If your family doctor isn’t on board with your desire for medical cannabis treatment, then you can also search for walk-in clinics or medical cannabis clinics with doctors licensed to provide the support you need. Your diagnosis must also have occurred within the last five years, anything longer than that and you might not qualify.

The ACMPR website will let you know what paperwork it requires for your application. In essence, the paperwork must confirm your medical diagnosis and the reason you’re seeking medical cannabis treatment.

Timing Is Everything

Timing matters in how to get a medical cannabis card, and if you missed the window, you may be ineligible for a card. You already know that your diagnosis has to come within five years of your application and that within the last year you have to have been monitored by a doctor. An authorized health care practitioner will then access your ACMPR application to determine your eligibility. Your medical records must fall within the correct timeframes; otherwise, you’ll be deemed ineligible.

It can seem complicated when working your way through all of the paperwork while you learn how to get a medical cannabis card, but it’s well worth with it once you get one. You’ll end up with a treatment option that’ll be right for you and will hopefully work to better treat the condition you currently suffer from. It’s uncertain how all of this will change come legalization this summer, but in the meantime, this is how it’s done.
